Still Worries Over IPT It Seems

The Yankee Group recently published some revealing research on the actual experience and concerns of those that plan and deploy IPT. It reveals a level of uncertainty about voice quality and network reliability that never seem to feature in the confident tones of vendor brochures.

Almost 40% of planners in enterprise IT cited "uncertain voice quality" as a main technical concern about IPT and UC. However this figure drops to just over 25% once it’s been deployed. One vertical appears particularly concerned: 55% of financial services organisations in the Yankee survey called voice quality their number one issue.

However lurking underneath the surface are the real issues such as QOS and data network performance. In other words expertise design of the converged network. This is borne out with another group of stats from the survey. Just over 40% were concerned with "single point of failure," and "network security". Although the latter consideration is of less concern once deployed.

Despite this being just one survey, it's something still often heard anecdotally, in best practice forums and online sources. It seems spending time and acquiring seasoned expertise to avoid these issues through 1st class design is still a worthwhile investment even when budgets are tight.
