Mobility
‘On the move’ access to communication, data and workflow is the goal of mobility. At this point in the convergence cycle, most associate laptops as the natural home for data while communication belongs to their mobiles or PDAs. In fact, communication is even further segregated into devices we use primarily for voice and SMS and those we use for email.
Nonetheless mobile devices are hugely popular with an estimated 70% of all organisational communication now being originated from a mobile device, regardless of whether the user is at their physical work desk.
Two of the near term milestones in the development of mobile solutions are to reduce the number of devices we need to take with us, and secondly, to provide greater access to organisational resources such as inboxes and directory services. These are usually confined within the security boundaries of the organisation which in practice has meant being on site to access them.
Both ambitions are now possible. They are also affordable since the cost of accessing communication and data services can be mitigated when mobile traffic is managed via the least cost routing options which a converged network can offer.
The final choice of mobility solution depends on the user’s work profile. For some it will be a phone/PDA in which voice/email management is the priority with some need to access data from CRM/ERP systems. For others, their laptop will remain the primary mobile solution with the occasional convenience of a soft phone when needed.
There are now solutions to fit the full spectrum of mobility needs across the organisation.
